Adult Education

Download the 2010-2011 Adult Ed Program

In the words of Pirkei Avot, chapters of ancestors, we learn that the world stands on three things: Torah, Worship, and Deeds of Loving Kindness. Our adult education program supports our commitment to Torah or Jewish learning. Throughout the year, there are many opportunities to increase one’s Jewish knowledge of Torah, Bible, history, theology, and more. Our rabbi leads monthly discussions on the Torah portion of the week and special lunch and learn sessions. In addition, there are always topics of interest offered throughout the year taught by our rabbi, educator, and special speakers from within our congregation and the larger community. We pride ourselves on offering a variety of learning opportunities to appeal to many interests. This year we are offering Hebrew classes and an Adult Bnei Mitzvah program. Most of our adult education is open to all in the community and free of charge.

Significant Jewish Books

Beaufort by Ron Leshem

Beaufort follows the story of Lieutenant Liraz “Erez” Liberti, the tough young commander of a squad of soldiers stationed at Beaufort in southern Lebanon in the months prior to Israel’s withdrawal in 2000. Showing the trauma of war, the mischief of the boys on leave, and the deep friendships they develop, author Ron Leshem paints a powerful portrait of the young men.

An Introduction to Islam for Jews by Reuven Firestone

“Jews, as never before, have a pressing need to understand the history, theology, and practice of Muslims and Islam. This book — designed specifically for the Jewish reader hungry for that understanding — is one of the first to fill that gap.”

The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit by Lucette Lagnado

Wall Street Journal investigative reporter Lucette Lagnado chronicles the story of her family from the early decades of the twentieth century in Cairo, Egypt, to their traumatic emigration to New York in the early 1960s. Along the way, the family must contend with the death of a child, womanizing habits of the patriarch, illness, and a revolution.

Saving Stanley: The Brickman Stories by Scott Nadelson

The eight stories that comprise Saving Stanley focus on the Brickman family – father, mother and two sons. At the narrative’s center is Daniel Brickman, the younger son, whose struggles of childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood come painfully alive through Nadelson’s prose. As narrative perspective changes, we gain an intimate view into the fears and hopes of Daniel and his family (including a Florida-based, ex-Communist, Russian-born grandfather), their stories fused with both humor and pathos.
